Make
Up Mania Newsletters
Volume 1, Number 4 - November
21, 1998
Hello Make Up Maniacs!
Now with all the bugs worked out our weekly newsletter should become
uh…weekly. Finally. After some trials and errors I’m sure this will
be a good thing. We plan on doing more specials just for our subscribers
and keep track of interesting News, Views and Reviews on the Make Up
front.

After finally getting caught up from our very first Halloween (and our
first Halloween rush) we settled in just in time to sponsor Glue Magazine’s
Second Issue Party. It was tres fashionable, set at Luna Park Monday
Nov. 16th. Laurie Pike, Glue’s dynamic Editor put a burlesque troop
known as “Girls in the Mood” on stage and let the news channels roll.
It was Gypsy Rose Lee classic, you know, the tease with out the strip.
Glue guests walked out with a great gift bag with lots of little goodies
that included a World Girl kit from Make Up Mania. Quite the soiree!
Just waiting for the Christmas parties now!

Our own Vanna in the Valley (Vanessa Dionne Browning) has just been
contracted as the Spring Rep Apprentice at the LA Opera! This really
goes with Make Up News but I wanted to talk about the value of a true
apprenticeship. We have lots of e-mails asking how to become a Make
Up Artist. I always respond by saying just start doing it, get as much
education as you can and find a talented artist to be your mentor. But
a real apprenticeship has unfortunately gone the way of your longtime
favorite lipstick color. Getting harder and harder to find, if not virtually
gone. Yet apprenticeships are how our business has been taught over
the last decades. From one artist to another. One technique at a time.
This system dissolved in the 70’s when studios began to change and education
centers started popping up to train a whole new non-union era. I think
there are a lot of fine schools out there but for people who are lucky,
dedicated, in the right place in the right time and talented will find
themselves sitting next to someone on a show (or somewhere) who is kind
enough to pass their knowledge on. That is a sacred thing in our art
and should always be taken as a stroke of luck. If you are far away
from the cities known for training Make Up Artists, get ahold of the
film commission, ask around and basically find the most talented professionals
in your area. Someone may be in the potion to pass on a lot of knowledge
your way and your lucky stars will start to shine. (To see just how
lucky Vanessa is see Rick Geyer’s interview in are Star Interview Archive.)
CONGRATS Vanna!!!!

I could easily see this part of my job becoming my favorite. For this
weeks review I had to take a long, luxurious bath in our new Lissee
Bath products. Oooh so hard! And yes, I said Lissee. You heard it right!
We have the FULL Lissee Beverly Hills line. This wonderful Aromatherapy
line has been a favorite, but slowly squeezed into hiding (especially
on the Each Coast) by the bigger lines. And we found it!! The Best thing
about Lissee is that it is Aroma Botanical based. Cruelty Free. And
it is all quality oils and botanicals. Remember Bubble Bath? Aahh, the
kind you had when you were a kid? They have a real bubble bath. Not
just a bath and shower gel you substitute for one, but a real one. Shower
Gels, Body Scrub (so yummy smelling you want to taste it.) We also have
the full Lissee Hair Care Line and their aromatherapy cosmetics line.
(Try their lipsticks - very fresh) Yippee! We are so happy. Welcome
aboard Lissee!!
Here is the recipe to follow:
Peace & Quiet Night Bath

Draw bath to desired temperature.
