Make Up Tip of the Week
Powder
Before I went to school for
make up, the fashion magazines didn't go into such detail about cosmetics
as they do now - and I really never understood what powder was for - other
than you put it on to help control oil. (thus keeping your make up on
longer) But powder is much more than that and the application of it becomes
very important for what you need to accomplish with it.
First of all, the general ingredients
of powder. Powder is usually a talc based product with clay, kaolin, zinc,
pigments, preservatives and perfumes. Some new powders are the mineral
based or rice based powders that are touting a non-talc ideology. Talc
is now being questioned on how carcinogenic it can be with use in cosmetics.
Lots of powders exist in many different forms. Mineral powders, rice powders,
powders in a brush etc. Powder is either pressed or loose. The amount
of oil, or isopropyl myristate, determines how dry or moist it is. A very
moist powder could be considered a dual finish.
The ideal use of powder is
for setting your make up. If you lay down a beautiful make up foundation
base - chances are it will not stay for long with out setting it with
powder. Same for concealers, they need to be set with powder. When we
teach professional make up artistry- we teach to apply all your cream
make up first - set with powder and then move to your powder make up,
like blush, powder highlight and shadows etc.
The correct way to apply powder.
Well - personally I love brushes - all kind of brushes. But for applying
a loose powder - I really prefer a powder puff. What you do is "stack"
the puff - this means that you pour, a good amount of powder - say a half
a teaspoon, onto the puff. You fold it in half and you rub the puff together
- literally pushing the powder into the puff. Now you have enough powder
to last all day. Great for when you are on set - take the little plastic
bag that the peach puff comes - cut one end open with scissors, write
the actors name on the plastic with a sharpie and you have a puff full
of powder - unless they are really oily - a good stack can last all day
for touch ups!!
I love the pressed powder application
with a brush. My favorite brush (I call a Diva Brush because it feels
so divine) makes you feel famous just to have it brushed across your face.
It is the #37 Medium Powder Canadian Squirrel Brush - love using this
in conjunction with a pressed powder for very light application of highlight
and shadow - LOVE dual finishes for this too!!!!
For powdering under the eye
- I have a secret that I have used for years - it's the Palladio White
Rice Powder. It comes in a block in a little chinese box. After your under
eye make up (foundation and/or concealers), it is exactly perfect - using
a nice soft brush. I like the squirrel crease or mini squirrel crease.
Roll the squirrel crease brush onto the block of white rice powder and
roll onto the area under the eye. Brush off the excess.
Always after powdering - use
a brush to brush off the excess.
P.S. Look for Palladio's Loose
Rice powders hitting Make Up Mania's pages soon. I love this!!!!! It is
so smooth and immediately absorbs into the skin with such an incredible
finish. All other powders can be found on the Glamour Floor - #2, and
brushes & puffs are on the Artists' Supplies Floor - #3 in our online
store at www.makeupmania.com!

The new issue of Glue Magazine
is in. I think it is their best issue ever. Glue has come into their own
- and they should because Glue is one year old with this issue. They had
a smashing event at La Deux for their one year anniversary. We wish them
the best because the mag is exactly what LA needs. A scope of Fashion
that has a touch of our star studded city but not devoted to who's who.
It portrays the edgier side of LA and the fashion reports are all local
designers. And we have some great talent in this angelic city! You'll
find it on Erika's floor on our online store - www.makeupmania.com

Marietta Carter-Narcisse. If
you haven't heard of her yet - you will. This dynamic, beautiful Make
Up Artist is not only the first Woman of Color to grace our Star Interview
pages - as the Spokeswoman for Interface Cosmetics, President of Fred
Segal Agency, Local 706 Union Member and mother - Marietta is on a fast
track to national recognition. A dynamic and realistic educator, her ideology
of black make up is revamping Make Up Artists from thinking of ethnic
make up as skin color and re-teaching it as undertones. I have always
carried in my make up kit a color wheel that has all the primary colors
plus black and white in it. I used to mix into my foundations. With this
handy little tool - I was never afraid of ethnic skin tones. When I heard
Marietta speak at a Fred Segal agency workshop - I knew this woman spoke
the truth when she started talking about black UNDERTONES. From that time
on, whenever I heard about her - my ears perked up. And now we are lucky
enough to have her story here - as our September Star Interview of the
Month. Check out in our Green Room - in Vanna of the Valley's monthly
column. And Vanna in the Valley writers - her new replies are in and going
up. Look to see if your Dear Vanna question was picked!
Please note - we are in In
Style Magazine this month - check us out in the "You Asked" column. We
also were included in Teen's People's Beauty.com article and I think the
author Jen Schroeder penned a wonderful article (besides us being in it)
- it is a very complimentary description of some happening sites that
sell make up.
That's it this time - until
next time
Be happy and think happy and
love happy -
Love -
