The Make Up Maniac

Volume One
Number 12

The Tony Awards are this weekend, and guess who's going, to do Make Up. That's right – your very own Make Up Maniac, Eva Marie. What will be in my kit? Well, definitely my RCMA Foundation Palette and the Rice Powder in white – (excellent for under the eyes). And my super-duper Lip Palette. We made one for a customer and I had to have one too – 36 colors of lipstick bliss! Of course there is always the thought, "What do I wear?!?!?!!!" My new vibe is Solar F/X – I love it!! I am wearing the Yellow – Starfire Glitter Sun Activated Nail Polish. It is part of the new summer colors we just got in from Solar F/X and they are going on the web site next week. And I don't know if I ever talked much about Solar F/X - but I used a lot of it recently and I have got to say – this stuff is great. I think the lipsticks are overshadowed by the Super Cool Sun Activated Nail Colors, but I am totally turned on by their lipsticks. Talk about a sexy, pouty color? OverExposed #27 is just that. When you wear it – I swear it makes your lips look fuller. Let me tell you about the other colors you got to check out. Sabotage – a true clear red indicative of 1950's & tail fin Chevrolets. The Bomb – sheer deep purple with a frost. And Divine – sparkly happy serious pink with a touch of violet. Great Silver packaging too! See you when I'm back from the Big Apple – do they still say that – or am I giving away my age?

NEWS

News FLASH!!! Make Up Mania is turning 1 year old! (Our birthday is June 14, 1998) Ahhhh, how cute – we are growing up : )

And to celebrate we decided to open a store. A real world one to go along with our virtual world one. Yep – we are moving our offices and opening up a boutique for all the So Cal maniacs who want to come by and see us. The move is June 14th – how coincidental! And everything will remain the same – web address – emails – phone – fax. We will have a new office address – which we will post for you all next Friday. Come visit us when you are in LA. We would love to see you. (By the way – if you are in So Cal and would like to be invited to our Grand Opening in August – send us an email so we can put you on the invite list.)

How do you start your own business? Your own e-commerce site? Become a web designer? Follow your dreams and passions? Well it may take a book to explore all that but you can get some glimpses into the minds of some people who have. Vanna of the Valley chose to Interview the Main Crew at Make Up Mania for our anniversary. It was fun to see Vanna's interviewing style and fun to be interviewed. But to look at the final draft it's kind of weird – a lot of times you don't think to yourself – why did I do that – what prepared me – what was I thinking?!?! If you like what we've done or think you can give a few pointers about our second year – check out the June Star Interviews. Hopefully we can inspire you to go after YOUR dream – that's what life's about – having fun and rocking your world…right?

Custom Blending? On the Internet? Is it possible? Well – we got our first tubes out this week and it is possible. Double bonus – the colors are turning out cool. So cool in fact that we are starting a FAVE PAGE. If we like the color you custom blend we will put it up on the "Custom Lipstick Fave Page" for others to buy. Look for the first two colors:
Liz – an ultra cool beige with a Lavender Frost. And Stevie – a deep sheer red violet crθme – sheer enough to wear everyday. Let us know if we can make a custom Lipstick for you.

THE Make Up Maniacs' Tip of the Week.

P.S. – this is new !

Everyone asks about the right way to apply blush. Okay – let's do a quick tour of color and gray value. (Very quick, I promise.) When you have a color – no matter what color it is – it has a gray value. Think of a pastel pink and rich maroon. Great – now think of the pastel pink and rich maroon in a black and white photograph. The gray they register in that black and white photograph is their gray value. Okay, so all colors have gray value.
So what does this have to do with cheek color? A LOT. Whenever you apply a color that is lighter than the skin tone to the skin, it will bring that area forward. That is, it will appear closer to the eye (or camera). Whenever you apply something that is darker than the skin tone, it will push that area back and appear to recede from the eye (or camera). The blush colors are traditionally darker than skin tone. (Try to think of them in gray value.)
So when you apply blush you are essentially contouring. Pushing that area back. If you place the blush too far forward it will create an illusion that the front of the face is pinched in. Most of us want nice high cheekbones. If you place the blush on the cheekbone you will minimize this bone and your face will appear rounder or flatter. Most people then would want the placement of the blush just under the cheekbone. Use a smaller blush brush (I prefer the chisel domette size in our brush section) for a lot of control.
First find your cheekbone. It's that big horizontal one that runs under your eye. Also known as the zygomatic. Feel that area – so you really know where that is. Now using small strokes apply the color forward. Do not bring it too far in – it will pinch the face in. Now smooth the color and blend nicely. Viola! cheek color and bones. Yes, you were born with them!

Until next time –

See you on 5th AVE. (NYC that is.)
