How did you get started as a makeup artist?
I had a fabulous date with Gregory, after he finished a hectic day doing makeup! Gregory is a freelance makeup artist based in Los Angeles whose focus is in fashion, video, and beauty editorial. He is also a Senior Artist with MAC Cosmetics’ Pro Team and has lots of Hollywood beauty scoop. Read on all you makeup maniacs!
How did you start in the makeup industry?
I met Doug at his home in Los Angeles. He just returned from working on his most recent project “A Lesson Before Dying,” starring Cicely Tyson. Doug was Ms. Tyson’s personal makeup artist and created a unique character makeup for her role.
How did you get started as a makeup artist and how long have you been in the business?
This month’s star interview of the month is with three time, Emmy award winning makeup artist, Karen J. Westerfield, of Star Trek’s, Deep Space 9. I visited with her in the valley, at her home in North Hollywood, California. She is currently in her seventh season with Deep Space 9, and loves spending time with her three-year old daughter Allison.
How long have you been a makeup artist?
I’d say about ten years.
Did you have a different career prior to becoming a makeup artist?
Yes, I worked in crafts service in the film industry.

Give me a brief overview of your background and why you decided to become an aesthetician?
I visited with Rick at his home in Burbank, California which currently is being remodeled. Rick celebrates his eleventh season with the Los Angeles Music Center Opera. He’s in full swing building wigs and preparing for the fall repertory. The opera season opens on September 8 with performances of “Carmen” and “Werther”.
What did you do prior to becoming a full time wigmaster for the LAMCO?
I was working for Estee Lauder doing makeup demonstrations in malls across southern California. I was also working in theatre doing wigs and makeup for Long Beach Civic Light Opera, Long Beach Opera, South Coast Repertory, and some equity waiver shows. I also traveled around with regional opera companies.
Have you ever wondered what it’s like to follow your dreams and come to Los Angeles and go to Make Up School. We decided to interview a recent graduate from one of the local schools to give you an idea of what it’s like. Straight from Houston, Texas meet Mandy Benton! She is a recent graduate of Westmore Academy of Cosmetic Arts, and is on her way to being the next makeup goddess! She loves the fast pace and excitement Los Angeles has to offer for her new career as a makeup artist. Mandy is ready to paint the stars or perhaps give them an up-do? Mandy is multi-talented as a licensed cosmetologist, and the industry loves those who can do it all. Look out Hollywood, this Texan is on her way to stardom as a makeup and hair artist!
I interviewed Dina at the Dinair Airbrush Makeup Headquarters in the Valley. She took time out of her busy day to talk with me about her rise to Airbrush Divahood. Dina is the original “Airbrush Makeup Artist to the Stars” since 1981, though her career in the film and television industry began over twenty years ago. Busy with new product developments and spreading the Dinair Revolution through the Airbrush Makeup Institute, Dina’s time is limited to a few choice projects. These projects include, a new Ford Mustang commercial with Catherine Zeta-Jones, the trailer for “Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me”, and consulting with celebrity makeup artists regarding new technologies like high definition television. Dina can also be known as an animal caretaker, matchmaker, and Junior Achievement Sponsor at Kennedy High School.
